So you've hit a creative block
Episode 7 and Jesus's invitation in burnout + plateau
In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about what to do when you hit a creative block and how it may actually be an invitation to deeper healing and greater creativity. I’m going to share about the kinds of blocks we often face as creatives and what we can do to actually work through them while abiding in Jesus. I hope this episode inspires you to see your creative blocks in a new light and encourages you to bring them to Jesus for your transformation.
Some thoughts on creative blocks
Every creative faces a block of some sort. Whether it’s burnout, overwhelm or plateau, creative blocks come with the territory. In the past, I used to get so frustrated when I’d hit a block, but now I’m realizing it can be opportunity for healing and growth.
Here are a few things God’s been speaking to me lately about creative blocks:
Creative blocks are a spiritual matter
I’ve come to see creative blocks as being spiritual matters. They often point out where there are cracks in our soul and where our spirit feels dry. Creativity is so intertwined with our spiritual health, and just as moments of spiritual dryness impacts our connection to God, creative blocks can point to deeper things that need attention and healing.
Creative blocks aren’t meant to be muscles through
Creative blocks aren’t something you’re meant to push through or try to go around. So often, we can approach overcoming a block from striving when that only makes us feel more exhausted. I’m learning that creative blocks are invitations to turn to Jesus and be renewed.
Creative blocks lead to new depth and growth
Renewal starts when we stop trying to do the work only Jesus can do. That includes getting through creative blocks. This doesn’t mean we just sit around passively and wait for fresh creativity, but we seek Jesus to know what he wants to show us through this creative block. This shift in understanding my creative blocks has brought so much transformation, and I’m so excited to see how God will lead you through your creative blocks into even greater creativity and purpose.
