So lately, God’s been clearly speaking to me about living with wisdom and faith, and it’s been a theme the past few posts. Then yesterday, I had a revelation while reading James. I’d read his instructions for asking God for wisdom before, but this time what struck me was the description of what’s happening when we ask with doubt.
James characterizes doubt, or double-mindedness, like being a wave tossed by the wind. And if I’m honest, I’ve definitely felt that way recently. Maybe you have, too. It’s that sense that you know the truth and feel confident in God one moment, and then get hit with anxiety the next. It’s really frustrating, and sometimes it feels impossible to snap out of.
However, I’m starting to sense the Spirit’s gentle conviction around this and see how being double-minded can be an obstacle in our path. But when we recognize that, all we need to do is return our attention to Jesus, the anchor of our faith.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” -James 1:5-6
Pause: Take a moment to look at today’s sketch. Notice any colors, shapes or details that catch your eye.
Ponder: What thoughts or feelings came to mind while looking at the art? What does the idea of being tossed by the wind stir in you?
Be present: How do you sense God’s presence in this moment? How might he be inviting you to respond?
